What is medical nutrition therapy?
Medical nutrition therapy is nutrition care for a specific medical condition, given by a registered dietitian (RD). It is more than a meal plan: your dietitian looks at your health history, lab results, medications and daily routine, then builds a plan that fits your food, culture and schedule, and adjusts it at follow-up visits.

Medicare and medical nutrition therapy
Medicare Part B covers MNT if you have diabetes or kidney disease, or had a kidney transplant in the last 36 months, and your doctor refers you. It includes 3 hours of one-on-one care in the first year and 2 hours each year after; your doctor can refer you for more if your condition changes. You pay nothing when the provider accepts Medicare assignment. Visits for other conditions are self-pay under Medicare. Your doctor can fax the referral to 866-850-2765. More on our Medicare page.
