Thyroid Nutrition: Hypothyroid, Hashimoto’s & More

Your thyroid sets the pace for energy and metabolism. Nutrition cannot replace thyroid medication, but it can help with fatigue, weight changes and the nutrients your thyroid relies on.

Thyroid nutrition counseling

Is this for you?

  • You have hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • You are gaining weight or feel tired despite treatment
  • You have hyperthyroidism or Graves’ disease and are losing weight
  • You have questions about gluten, soy, iodine or selenium

How our dietitians help

Nutrients that matter

We review iodine, selenium, iron, zinc and vitamin D intake from food and supplements.

Medication timing

Calcium, iron, coffee and fiber can affect how well thyroid medicine is absorbed. We plan meals around your dose.

Myth-busting

We explain what research says about gluten-free diets, soy and raw cruciferous vegetables, so you only make changes that help.

Energy & weight

Steady meals, protein and sleep habits help with fatigue and weight changes.

What to expect

  1. First visit: your dietitian reviews your health history, labs, medications and eating habits, then you set 2–3 goals together.
  2. Your plan: a personalized plan with meal ideas, recipes and tools, shared in your Healthie portal.
  3. Follow-ups: regular check-ins, usually every week or every other week at first, to track progress and adjust.

Visits are in person in Suwanee or Lawrenceville, GA, or by secure video in 25 states. More about visits.

Insurance coverage

Commercial plans often cover nutrition counseling for thyroid conditions alongside related diagnoses.

Check your insurance in 10 seconds

Coverage depends on your specific plan. We check your benefits before your first visit, and it helps if you also call the member number on your insurance card. Our billing promise means no surprise bills.

Thyroid: common questions

Should I go gluten-free for Hashimoto’s?

Only if you have celiac disease or a clear benefit. Some people with Hashimoto’s also have celiac disease, so ask your doctor about testing before cutting gluten.

Can food fix my thyroid?

Food cannot replace thyroid medication, but good nutrition supports thyroid function and can ease symptoms like fatigue and weight change.

Do I need an iodine supplement?

Most people in the US get enough iodine from food. Too much can harm the thyroid, so we review your intake before suggesting anything.
