Nutrition for Surgery Recovery & Wound Healing
Your body needs more protein, calories and certain nutrients to heal. Eating well before and after surgery, or while a wound heals, supports recovery and strength. We make a plan you can follow even when your appetite is low.

Is this for you?
- You have surgery coming up and want to be ready
- You are recovering from surgery and have a low appetite
- You have a wound or pressure injury that is slow to heal
- You have lost weight or strength after a hospital stay

Key nutrients
A food-first look at nutrients involved in healing, and a review of any supplements with your doctor.
Small, easy meals
Simple meal and snack ideas for low appetite, limited cooking or a modified diet after surgery.
Blood sugar and healing

Surgery & Wound Healing: common questions
How much protein do I need to heal?
Most people need more protein than usual while healing. Your dietitian sets a target based on your weight, kidney function and the type of surgery or wound.
Should I take supplements for wound healing?
Sometimes, but not always. We look at what you eat first and review any supplement with your doctor, because some can interact with medications.
