Bariatric Surgery Nutrition, Before and After Surgery

Many surgeons and insurance plans require a nutrition evaluation, and often a series of visits with a registered dietitian, before weight-loss surgery such as a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. We provide those visits, fill out the forms your surgeon and insurance need, and fax them back to your surgeon's office. After surgery, we stay with you through every stage.

How our dietitians help

Evaluation before surgery

A full review of your health history, eating patterns, weight history and readiness for the changes surgery brings.

The visits your plan requires

We schedule the number of visits your surgeon and insurance plan ask for, and keep each one on track so your timeline doesn't slip.

Paperwork done for you

We complete the required forms and fax them, with your visit notes, to your surgeon's office.

Every stage after surgery

Step by step from liquids to puréed and soft foods and back to regular meals, following your surgeon's plan: protein first, small portions, eating slowly and fluids between meals.

Long-term support

Help with vitamins and minerals, protein goals, dumping syndrome, plateaus and weight regain, months or years after surgery.

Hospital-trained dietitians

Many of our dietitians come to us from top hospitals, including Emory, Northside and Piedmont in Atlanta and Rush in Chicago, so they bring real experience caring for surgery patients.

What to expect

  1. First visit: your dietitian reviews your health history, labs, medications and eating habits, then you set 2–3 goals together.
  2. Your plan: a personalized plan with meal ideas, recipes and tools, shared in your Healthie portal.
  3. Follow-ups: regular check-ins, usually every week or every other week at first, to track progress and adjust.

Bariatric Surgery (Before & After): common questions

How many visits do I need before bariatric surgery?

It depends on your insurance plan and your surgeon. Some require one nutrition evaluation; others require a series of visits, often monthly over several months. Bring your surgeon's checklist or call us, and we will plan the visits you need.

Do you send the paperwork to my surgeon?

Yes. We fill out the forms your surgeon and insurance plan require and fax them, with your visit notes, to your surgeon's office.

Do you help after surgery too?

Yes, at every stage: the liquid, puréed and soft food stages right after surgery, getting back to regular meals, and long-term support with vitamins, protein and weight regain. You don't need to have had your pre-surgery visits with us.

Can I do my visits by video?

Usually, yes. We offer secure video visits in 25 states and in-person visits in Suwanee and Lawrenceville, GA. A few surgery programs ask for in-person visits before surgery, so check with your surgeon's office.

How does my surgeon refer me?

Your surgeon's office can fax a referral to 866-850-2765, or you can book directly and tell us which surgeon you are working with.
